A Beginner's Guide To Developing Short Film Ideas

Short films are one of the easiest ways for inexperienced filmmakers to gain recognition and break into the film industry. Unfortunately, this is not a guaranteed method and only the most effective short videos are considered. Creating an effective short film can be challenging and slightly daunting if one is unaware of how to go about filming and producing this type of video. This article will provide information on developing short film ideas and creating the short film.

1. Building A Plot

Creativity is necessary in order to create a story line for the video; however, it is important to apply structure to the simple tale. All films, long and short, require a beginning, middle, and conclusion, but it is only longer films that have the time for long and winding plots. When creating a short film it is important to define characters and build a plot in a short period of time grabbing the audience immediately and retaining their attention.

In order to meet these requirements, it is recommended that one develop a concrete and relatable plot. An audience will generally stop watching a film that they find difficult to understand and this will decrease the success of one’s short movie.

2. Casting Talented and Trained Actors

One of the most important aspects to creating a successful short film is the casting. Despite the fact that one has a limited budget, it is highly recommended that one recruit actors who have experience and training in acting. In addition to casting experienced actors, it is vital that the actor suit the role. That he or she is right for the role. By this I mean, if the script has a character that calls for beefcake or a pin-up girl, then DO NOT cast your friends or actors that nobody would think that of. Inappropriate casting can lead to a difficulty for the audience to relate to the film; for example, an outgoing individual will not be suitable for a bashful character.

3. Going Over Budget

It is essential that one draft a budget before filming to determine how much money is available for use. Drafting a budget will also allow one to allocate suitable amounts to different aspects of production; for example, a set amount will be allocated for casting and another amount allocated to software purchases. Of course, new filmmakers will be operating on a limited amount and must consider the affordability of different elements; however, it is recommended that one overspend when purchasing audio and film editing software. This may seem an expense, but the quality provided will validate the cost.

4. Considering The Location

The consideration of a filming location is not always on the top of the production list of things to do; however, it is potentially one of the most important factors, especially when filming outside or in public areas. It is vital that one identify any regulations regarding filming in an area and obtain the relevant permits. It is also recommended that one avoid filming outside as environmental elements can negatively affect the filming process.

Final Words On The Matter

As can be seen, there are various points to take into consideration when producing a short film ranging from short film ideas to the location being used. Using the information above will assist one in filming an effective video.
